Chemical Engineering Subjects | List and Introduction of Subjects

Chemical Engineering Subjects:

As mentioned in the previous post, Chemical Engineering is the broadest and oldest discipline of Engineering, therefore, list of Chemical Engineering Subjects is very large and contain the courses that are vast. If we mention subjects of Chemical Engineering they are following:

  • Applied Chemistry
  • Applied Physics
  • Applied mathematics
  • Mass Transfer Fundamentals
  • Stoichiometry
  • Heat Transfer Fundamentals
  • Engineering Materials
  • Fluid Dynamics
  • Fluid Mechanics
  • Calculus
  • Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics
  • Communication Skills
  • Computer Fundamentals
  • Chemical Reactions Engineering
  • Organic and Inorganic Chemistry
  • Particle Technology
  • Chemical Process Industries
  • Instrumentation and Process Control
  • Chemical Process Calculations
  • Simultaneous Heat and Mass Transfer
  • Electrical Technology
  • Chemical Process Design and Simulation
  • Transport Phenomena
  • Fuels and Energy
  • Environmental Engineering
  • Engineering Mechanics
  • Engineering Drawing
  • Computer Aided Engineering Drawing
  • Elective Major Courses
  • FYP (Final Year Projects)

This is the HEC approved list of major Chemical Engineering Subjects. Some subjects are missing though but major subjects are mentioned in the list. These subjects are taught in Universities mostly in the duration of 4-years B.Sc. Chemical Engineering Degree. Let us discuss briefly the basic subjects which are usually taught in 1st year of B.Sc. Chemical Engineering.

1. Applied Chemistry:

Applied Chemistry is the one the basic subject usually taught in first year of duration. In this subject Basic Principles, theories and law are studied which are useful for a Chemical Engineer knowledge. Some of the chapters that are studied in Applied Chemistry are Solutions ( molarity, molality, concentration, unit conversions, etc.), Chemical Kinetics ( Law of Mass Action, Order of Reaction, etc.), Chromatography, Electrochemistry, Atomic Structure and many other topics.

2. Applied Physics:

These subjects are called Applied because the principles of these subjects are employed by the Chemical Engineers to perform their work and job. All the instruments that are working in any industry use Electricity, so, to understand about what is Electricity? What is the behavior of Electricity? What is Current and Voltage? and many other related questions, this subject is introduced in Chemical Engineering Curriculum.

3. Applied Mathematics:

It is well known saying that "Engineer's Mathematics should be strong". An Engineer is well known by his problem solving ability. Mostly these problems are in form of numerical and also complicated, so, an Engineer will be able to solve these problems if he has a good knowledge of Mathematics. Mathematical rules and principles are applied on problems and are solved easily.

4. Engineering Drawing:

Engineering drawing is the major subject of Mechanical Engineering because they have to design different types of machinery but Chemical Engineers should also have a well-known knowledge about Drawing because they have to design Chemical Equipments used in Industries. To fulfill this need, this course is included in the list of Chemical Engineering Subjects.

5. Computing Fundamentals:

Computing Fundamentals is now necessary and important subject of every Degree's Curriculum. As all of you know well that Now world is so advanced and using Computers in every field so for the Engineering Student it is necessary to learn how to operate computer, how to make flow sheets on computer, how to make reports, how to make presentations, how to mail someone. So, we must say if a Chemical Engineer has not a good knowledge of computer he is not doing well for his career.

6. Islamic Studies/Pakistan Studies:

As being a Pakistani and Muslim it is compulsory to have a knowledge of Islam and History of Pakistan. To accomplish this need and to make students more Patriotic and Religious, this subject is the part of Curriculum and contains a heavy Credit Hours. Topics to be discussed in Islamic Studies are mostly Ahadees e Mubarak, Quran Pak, and its Translation, various topics related to the character of a Muslim and Islamic History. In Pakistan Studies, everything related to History of Islam in Subcontinent along with Culture, Seasons, Politics, Export, Import, etc is studied.
